Belgium Complete Stunning Comeback to Defeat Senegal 3-2 After Extra Time
Tielemans' Late Penalty Sends Red Devils Into FIFA World Cup Round of 16
Belgium produced one of the most dramatic comebacks of the FIFA World Cup 2026, recovering from a two-goal deficit to defeat Senegal 3-2 after extra time and secure a place in the Round of 16.
Senegal appeared to be cruising towards a famous victory after goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaïla Sarr gave the African side a commanding 2-0 lead.
Diarra opened the scoring in the first half after reacting quickest to a rebound inside the penalty area, while Sarr doubled Senegal's advantage early in the second half with a powerful finish following an excellent assist from Sadio Mané.
Belgium struggled to create meaningful chances for much of the contest and looked on the verge of elimination. However, the introduction of Romelu Lukaku transformed the game.
The veteran striker pulled one goal back in the 86th minute, tapping home from close range to give Belgium hope. Just three minutes later, Youri Tielemans headed in an equaliser from a Leandro Trossard cross, completing a remarkable turnaround and forcing the match into extra time.
Both teams had opportunities to find a winner during the additional 30 minutes. Belgium came agonisingly close when Dodi Lukebakio struck the crossbar, while Senegal missed a golden chance through Ibrahim Mbaye.
The decisive moment arrived deep into stoppage time of extra time. Tielemans was brought down inside the penalty area by Lamine Camara, and after a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty.
Tielemans stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to complete Belgium's extraordinary comeback and seal a dramatic 3-2 victory.
