E-Rickshaw Drivers in Siliguri Oppose New Route System, Demand Free Movement in the City

E-Rickshaw Drivers in Siliguri Oppose New Route System, Demand Free Movement in the City

In Siliguri, e-rickshaw drivers have voiced strong opposition to new route-based restrictions that limit their movement. They held a meeting to call for a return to the previous system, which allowed them to move freely across the city.

To help reduce traffic congestion, local authorities recently introduced color-coded stickers to set specific routes for e-rickshaws. However, drivers say these new routes are creating many issues for them. They also claim the police are not letting them operate even on the assigned routes. In response, the drivers recently held a protest to highlight their concerns.

After the protest, the police promised to hold talks with the drivers. Ahead of this meeting, e-rickshaw drivers from various city stands gathered near the Mahananda River on Sunday afternoon to discuss their concerns. Sudip Ghosh, the president of the Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri E-Rickshaw Association, attended the meeting to support the drivers.
