Ecuador Shock Germany 2-1 to Reach World Cup Round of 32
Gonzalo Plata's Late Winner Seals Historic Victory as Ecuador Advance to the Knockout Stage
Ecuador produced one of the biggest upsets of the FIFA World Cup 2026 by defeating Germany 2-1 in their final Group E match, securing a place in the Round of 32 as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams.
Germany made the perfect start, taking the lead just two minutes into the match through Leroy Sané. The goal survived a VAR review despite Ecuador's protests over a possible foul during the build-up, giving Julian Nagelsmann's side an early advantage.
Ecuador responded quickly and refused to let the setback affect them. In the ninth minute, Nilson Angulo fired a stunning long-range strike past Manuel Neuer to score Ecuador's first goal of the tournament and level the contest.
Germany controlled possession for much of the first half and created several chances but failed to regain the lead before the break. Early in the second half, the Germans were awarded a penalty, only for VAR to overturn the decision after identifying a foul in the build-up.
With both teams searching for a winner, Ecuador delivered the decisive blow in the 77th minute. Kevin Rodríguez flicked on a corner into the danger area, where Gonzalo Plata reacted quickest to poke the ball past veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and send Ecuador into a 2-1 lead.
Germany pushed forward in the closing stages, but Ecuador defended resolutely to preserve their historic victory. The result sees Ecuador finish third in Group E with four points, enough to qualify for the Round of 32, while Germany, despite suffering their first defeat of the tournament, remain group winners after victories in their opening two matches.
