Maeda and Elanga Score as Both Nations Advance from Group F
Japan and Sweden both booked their places in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 after playing out an entertaining 1-1 draw in their final Group F encounter at Dallas Stadium.
With qualification on the line, both teams started cautiously in a closely contested first half. Japan made the breakthrough shortly after halftime. In the 56th minute, Ritsu Doan delivered a perfectly weighted through ball for Daizen Maeda, who calmly slotted his finish into the bottom corner to hand the Samurai Blue a deserved lead.
Sweden responded almost immediately. Just six minutes later, Anthony Elanga produced a stunning long-range strike that flew beyond goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, bringing the Scandinavian side level and scoring his second goal of the tournament.
Both teams pushed for a winner in the closing stages. Alexander Isak came close for Sweden, forcing Suzuki into an excellent save, while Gustaf Lagerbielke headed narrowly wide. Deep into stoppage time, Suzuki preserved the draw with two outstanding saves, first denying Elanga before tipping Isak's powerful header onto the crossbar.
The final whistle confirmed qualification for both sides. Japan finished second in Group F and advanced to the Round of 32, where they will face Brazil. Sweden also progressed after securing one of the tournament's best third-placed finishes and now await confirmation of their knockout-stage opponents.
