Messi Scores Twice as Argentina Beat Austria to Reach World Cup Knockout Stage

Lionel Messi once again proved decisive as Argentina defeated Austria 2-0 in their second FIFA World Cup 2026 group-stage match, securing qualification for the Round of 32 with a game to spare.

The Argentine captain scored both goals in Dallas, helping the defending champions maintain their perfect start to the tournament and continue their title defence in impressive fashion.

The match began dramatically when Argentina were awarded an early penalty. However, Messi missed the opportunity to open the scoring, with Austria surviving the early scare.

Despite facing tight marking from the Austrian defence throughout the first half, Messi eventually broke the deadlock in the 38th minute. The Argentine legend curled a precise left-footed effort past the goalkeeper to score his record-breaking 17th FIFA World Cup goal and give his side a deserved lead.

Austria showed determination and created several chances of their own but struggled to break down Argentina's organised defence, with goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez once again keeping a clean sheet.

As the match entered stoppage time, Messi produced another moment of brilliance. After a quick attacking move inside the Austrian penalty area, the 39-year-old found space among several defenders and calmly finished to seal a 2-0 victory for Argentina.

The brace took Messi's tally to five goals in two matches at the tournament and further strengthened his position among the greatest players in World Cup history. The Argentine captain also became the first player to score in six consecutive World Cup matches and extended his record for most World Cup goals.

Argentina have now won both of their group-stage matches, scoring five goals and conceding none, underlining their status as one of the favourites to lift the trophy once again.
