Netherlands Thrash Sweden 5-1 to Boost World Cup Knockout Hopes
The Netherlands delivered one of the most impressive performances of the FIFA World Cup 2026 so far, defeating Sweden 5-1 in a commanding Group F encounter on Saturday.
Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo both scored twice as the Dutch side overwhelmed Sweden with an attacking masterclass, strengthening their position in the race for a place in the knockout stage.
The Netherlands made a dream start when Brobbey opened the scoring in the fifth minute. The striker finished from close range after a well-worked move involving Tijjani Reijnders and Cody Gakpo.
Brobbey doubled the lead just 12 minutes later, once again finding the net after excellent work down the right flank. The early goals left Sweden struggling to recover and handed the Dutch complete control of the match.
Despite Sweden creating several chances before halftime, goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen produced a series of important saves to preserve the two-goal advantage.
The Netherlands continued their dominance after the break. Cody Gakpo scored the third goal within minutes of the restart before adding his second of the match shortly afterwards with a powerful finish from outside the penalty area.
Sweden managed to pull one back through substitute Anthony Elanga in the 59th minute, briefly raising hopes of a comeback. However, the Dutch remained in complete control and continued to create opportunities.
Substitute Crysencio Summerville capped a brilliant performance by scoring the fifth goal late in the match, completing a comprehensive victory for Ronald Koeman's side.
The result provides a major boost for the Netherlands after their opening draw against Japan and places them in a strong position heading into the final group-stage match. Sweden, meanwhile, face a must-win encounter in their next game to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
