Rotary awards for runner, sweeper and social worker
Rotary Club of Darjeeling conferred Rotary awards to three heroes from Darjeeling who have made immense impact in our society.
The 2022-23 Rotary Award in the field of vocational service was conferred on Deepak Balmiki, who is a sweeper in the Darjeeling municipality.
“Deepak Balmiki’s selfless dedication to clean Darjeeling was noticed by our Rotarian Jamling Tenzing Norgay Sherpa over a period of time. We felt that he is one of our community’s heroes,” said Sunirmal Chakravarti, president, Rotary Club of Darjeeling.
Similarly, the Rotary Award in the field of sports was conferred on Sunita Subba. Sunita, who is also a mother and a working professional, is a long distance runner who took to running only in 2016.
“In 2022, she managed to win the 122 kilomter Ladakh marathon and she is surely an inspiration for our community,” said Amar Singh Rai, past president of Rotary Club of Darjeeling.
In the field of community service, the award was conferred to Meghraj Rai, president of the Mahakal Mandir committee in Darjeeling. Rai, has been helping the needy in various capacities over the years.
The chief guest at the function was Samden Dukpa, executive director, Gorkhaland Territorial Administration and also a honorary member of the Rotary Club of Darjeeling.
