Spain End Ronaldo's World Cup Dream with Late Victory Over Portugal

Mikel Merino's Stoppage-Time Winner Sends Spain Into Quarter-finals

Spain booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals after a dramatic 1-0 victory over Portugal, with Mikel Merino scoring a stoppage-time winner in a tense Round of 16 clash in Arlington, Texas.

The fiercely contested Iberian derby appeared destined for extra time until Merino struck in the 90+1st minute to send Spain through and bring Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup career to an emotional end.

Spain controlled large portions of the match and created the better chances throughout. Mikel Oyarzabal missed a golden one-on-one opportunity in the first half, while Diogo Costa produced a series of outstanding saves to keep Portugal in the contest.

Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal was a constant threat for Spain, forcing Costa into several crucial stops and creating problems for the Portuguese defence with his pace and creativity.

Portugal also had their moments. Cristiano Ronaldo came close with an acrobatic effort in the first half, while Nuno Mendes struck the crossbar with a powerful deflected shot as Roberto Martínez's side gradually grew into the game.

The second half became a tactical battle, with both teams struggling to find a breakthrough despite several promising attacks. Bruno Fernandes fired into the side netting, while Dani Olmo and Pedri continued to test Portugal's defensive resilience.

Just when extra time seemed inevitable, Spain delivered the decisive blow. A cleverly worked free-kick created space for Ferran Torres, who turned brilliantly before slipping a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Mikel Merino. The midfielder kept his composure and finished confidently past Diogo Costa in the 91st minute.

Portugal threw everyone forward in search of an equaliser, even sending goalkeeper Diogo Costa into the opposition penalty area for a late set-piece. However, Spain's defence stood firm, and João Neves' final opportunity drifted wide as the full-time whistle confirmed Spain's victory.

The defeat marks the end of Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup journey, while Spain continue their pursuit of a second World Cup title.
