Japan Snatch Dramatic Late Draw Against Netherlands in World Cup Thriller
Japan produced a spirited late comeback to hold the Netherlands to a 2-2 draw in an entertaining FIFA World Cup 2026 Group F clash at Dallas Stadium on Sunday.
The Dutch side twice took the lead during the contest but were unable to secure all three points as Japan showed remarkable resilience, with Daichi Kamada scoring a dramatic equaliser in the 88th minute.
After a goalless first half, the match burst into life shortly after the restart. Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk opened the scoring in the 51st minute, heading home from a Ryan Gravenberch delivery to put his side ahead.
Japan responded quickly through Keito Nakamura, who found the net just six minutes later after being set up by Takefusa Kubo, bringing the Asian side level at 1-1.
The Netherlands regained the advantage in the 64th minute when Crysencio Summerville scored his first international goal, finishing a well-worked move to restore the Dutch lead.
However, Japan refused to back down and continued to push forward in search of another equaliser. Their persistence paid off two minutes from time when a corner caused confusion inside the Dutch penalty area, with Kamada getting the decisive touch to make it 2-2.
The result earned Japan a valuable point against one of the tournament favourites and highlighted the team's fighting spirit on the world stage. For the Netherlands, the draw will feel like a missed opportunity after leading twice during the match.
Both teams now turn their attention to their next Group F fixtures as they continue their quest for a place in the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
