Punjab Kings Defeat Mumbai Indians to Book IPL 2025 Final Clash With RCB
In a thrilling Qualifier 2 clash of IPL 2025, Punjab Kings (PBKS) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by five wickets to secure a spot in the final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The match, held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on June 1, witnessed a stunning performance from PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer, who led from the front with a magnificent unbeaten 87 off just 41 balls. Chasing a challenging target of 204, Punjab Kings completed the task with one over to spare, finishing at 207/5 in 19 overs.
The run chase began with an early jolt as Prabhsimran Singh fell for 6, but Josh Inglis counterattacked fiercely, scoring 38 off 21 balls, including 20 runs in a single over off Jasprit Bumrah. Inglis, however, departed after a brisk stand. Nehal Wadhera then joined Shreyas and contributed a valuable 48 off 29 balls. Their 84-run partnership steadied the chase, with Wadhera playing aggressively while Shreyas anchored the innings. Even after Wadhera’s dismissal in the 16th over, Iyer stayed composed and took the match deep. He accelerated in the death overs, smashing three sixes in an over to put the result beyond doubt. Shreyas’ innings was laced with audacious strokeplay and calm leadership under pressure.
Earlier, Mumbai Indians posted a competitive total of 203/6 after being put into bat. Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav both scored 44, stitching a crucial 72-run stand for the third wicket. Their efforts were followed by a late flourish from Naman Dhir, who scored 37 off just 18 balls, pushing MI past the 200-run mark. Despite a strong batting show, MI's bowling lacked impact, with Jasprit Bumrah going wicketless and conceding 40 runs in his four overs. Hardik Pandya, though economical, failed to deliver breakthroughs at key moments.
With this clinical victory, PBKS marched into their first IPL final since the tournament’s inception, where they will face RCB in the summit clash. Shreyas Iyer’s captain’s knock, combined with solid contributions from Wadhera and Inglis, ensured a historic night for Punjab Kings and set the stage for a blockbuster IPL 202
5 final.
