Seeing Road Encroachment, the Mayor Orders Immediate Clearance

Siliguri: The Siliguri Municipal Corporation has conducted multiple drives to clear encroached footpaths, aiming to address the city’s traffic congestion. Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb initiated this step primarily to tackle the rising traffic issues. However, despite repeated efforts, some businesses have blatantly ignored the corporation’s directives and continue to encroach on the footpaths. Mayor Gautam Deb has stated firmly that street and footpath encroachment will not be tolerated.

On Thursday, when he arrived at the municipal office, he noticed that the crucial road leading to Siliguri Girls’ High School, Siliguri College, and the municipality had been encroached upon by footpath vendors and some shopkeepers. A food stall had set up displays, occupying part of the road, and new garages and stalls encroaching on the footpath further astonished the mayor. He immediately inspected the area with municipal officials and ordered swift action after assessing the situation.

The mayor stated that the encroachment is causing inconvenience to school and college students, among others. He mentioned that first, a notice will be issued to warn the encroachers, and if they fail to comply with the municipal order, their setups will be removed.
